Everybody Loves Duct Tape
I argue with my protagonist.

RIA:
I'll attach it with duct tape. It'll be a great punch line.

ME:
Duct tape is a cliche. It's a cheap shot. We're not doing that.

RIA:
But everybody loves duct tape! Besides, you've never seen anyone do this with duct tape, have you?

ME:
Wow. Um. No. Okay. I guess everybody loves duct tape.

Definitely not that!

I think my favorite thing about that photo is the duckie taped to the wall next to the baby. Just in case duct taping the baby to the wall isn't enough to keep her out from under foot, the duck will surely mollify her. Hm. No, actually, my favorite thing about that photo is actually that the baby is smiling. If the baby didn't look to be perfectly content taped up on the wall like that, it might be more disturbing than funny.

When you look closely, you can see that the tape isn't on any baby skin. I wonder if they made the hanging part first then put the baby in it, b/c I can't imagine a baby sitting still for long enough to get that put together and still be smiling!

I am so incredibly slow on the uptake. I just got it that the stuffed duckie is there so the duct tape can also be duck tape.

Just remember that you don't want to use duct tape on actual ducts. Because, it apparently doesn't work.

And now I've spent way too long googling around trying to pin down the etymology of the name. Snopes.com could not help me, perhaps because actual experts disagree about whether duct tape was originally called duck tape. Snopes.com did, however, want to tell me about some pretty impressive duct tape related urban legends. Apparently it really does work for treating warts. It appears in numerous urban legends as a signifier of evil intent, as in, "...and when the police searched his trunk, they found duct tape and knives."
